Ruth L. Long, 102, of Pana (formerly of Assumption) passed away Friday November 3, 2011 at Heritage Manor in Pana, IL.
Services to celebrate Ruth’s life will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday November 9, 2011 with visitation one hour before at Dawson & Wikoff West Wood St. Funeral Home, 515 West Wood St. in Decatur, IL. Burial will be in Old Stonington Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to One Hope United Children’s Home P.O. Box 548, Centralia, IL 62801-0548.
Mrs. Long was born on Friday August 13, 1909 in rural Assumption, the fifth child of six children, with four brothers and one sister, all who have passed away. She was the daughter of Jacob D. and Beatrice Hennard Long. Ruth married Harold O. Long on December 31, 1938 in St. Charles, MO; he passed away on October 17, 1990. She graduated from Assumption High School, with further education in Chicago that included art lessons and flying lessons in 1937 and 1938. Ruth was employed on the editorial staff of one of the leading farm magazines in Chicago and also worked for a Chicago realtor before marring Harold and moving to Assumption to continue farming.
After her husband passed away Mrs. Long co-managed their farmland. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Decatur, the D.A.R. Springfield Chapter, the Genealogical Society, the Christian County Historical Society, the Macon County Historical Society, and the Christian County Farm Bureau.
Ruth is survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister and four brothers.
